Contest Overview and Contestant Expectations

The following information is provided to event contestants for the First Responder UAS Indoor Challenge (UAS 5.0). There will be 3 separate locations for contestants to use during the live event.

Check In and Safety Briefs

  • The contest begins on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Contestants must arrive at the Kansas State University Salina (KSUS) College Center Conference Room (CCCR) between 7:15-7:45 am CST to check in.
  • Upon check-in, contestant teams will be assigned a team number. The team number corresponds to the event schedule.
  • Contestants must attend a daily safety briefing from 8:00-8:30 am CST at KSUS CCCR. Safety Briefings will begin promptly at 8:00 am CST.
  • Contestants who do not check in and attend the safety brief may be unable to participate.
  • KSU CCCR will also serve as a lounge space throughout the event for contestants. Contestants may remain at this location or may leave as needed.
  • Contestants can sign up for practice time slots at KSUS CCCR.
  • Park in the B3 Lot on the KSUS Campus.
  • Wireless internet is available in the facility at no cost using the following login:
    • Account Name: KSU Guest – no password is required.

  • Contestants can utilize Hangar 509 (H509) for safety checks, static checks, practice and testing.
  • H509 will have limited access.
  • Contestants must sign up for practice time slots at H509 in advance at KSUS CCCR and will check in at H509 upon arrival.
  • Contestants will be given time slots for the scheduled event in H509.
  • Contestants must ensure they are at the event location and ready to participate at least 15 minutes before their scheduled event starts.
  • Contestants who do not check in before start time may be unable to participate.
  • H509 has designated parking outside of the building.

  • Contestants will be given time slots for the Indoor Simulated Mission.
  • Contestants who do not check in before start time may be unable to participate.
  • Contestants must ensure they are at the event location and ready to participate at least 15 minutes before their scheduled event starts.
  • Contestants will not go beyond the gate without permission or an escort.
  • Contestants will have a designated parking area near the Indoor Simulated Mission location.

  • Dinner will be hosted at 5:30 pm CST at the KSUS CCCR on Thursday, April 11, 2024. All competing teams and contestants should plan to attend.

  • Salina, KS: about 10 minutes, limited daily flights
  • Manhattan, KS: about 1 hour
  • Wichita, KS: about 1.5 hours
  • Kansas City, MO: about 2 hours

Contestant Amenities

  • Contestants will have a designated lounge area to meet within the facility at Kansas State University Salina.
  • Cafeteria on site and many local restaurants available.

Replacement parts will not be readily available, and contestants should come prepared with some back-up parts should they anticipate needing them. Basic supplies can be obtained at a few stores, listed below, that are within a few minutes’ drive of the event location.

Security of items cannot be guaranteed. Contestants are encouraged to monitor and securely store all items. NIST, Capitol Consulting Corporation, Kansas State University, and the Salina Airport Authority are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged items.

The smoking of cigarettes, cigars, pipes or burning tobacco in any other form or device, as well as the use of electronic cigarettes, vaporizers, hookah or other water pipe devices and all other related devices, is prohibited on university property and in university owned vehicles.
